Applied Science BTEC Level 3

Curriculum Intent

Students will have the knowledge, skills and desire to understand and question the world around them.

Why Should I study Applied Science?

If you have enjoyed studying Science at GCSE and wish to continue studying in this area without specialising in particular subject areas, Level 3 Applied Science offers an ideal alternative. The course covers aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and is assessed through a mixture of exams, external assignments and portfolios of coursework completed in class.

The course is based around practical work and the applications of science in real life. A wide range of teaching and learning styles are used including whole class teaching, practical investigations, research and group work.

What skills will I gain?

Studying Level 3 Applied Science course will help to develop a number of transferable skills that will be of benefit in future study and employment, both in and out of the Science sector. These include the ability to carry out a range of practical tasks carefully and accurately, researching and presenting information, working as a team, managing time and organising work and communicating information to varied audiences.

What career paths is Applied Science Suitable for?

Level 3 BTEC Science is an equivalent qualification to AS and A Levels so it can lead to a range of university courses and careers, both in and out of the Science sector. The majority of university courses make offers based on the course.

Specifically, it could prepare you for employment in the Science industry, where the practical and applied nature of the course would be a great benefit.

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and/or Maths.
  • National data suggests successful students will have achieved an average points score of 4.0 or more.
