At Aspire Sixth we are committed to fostering the highest expectations in French and aim for all our learners to develop high levels of linguistic ability; a set of transferable skills and an international growth mindset; deep, intercultural understanding; and a knowledge of French film and literature by the end of Key Stage 5.
A Level French will develop your knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE level. The course will enable you to use French in a wide range of contexts and gain a useful insight into another culture. Through the study of a modern foreign language, you will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of, and reflect upon, various aspects of contemporary society.
Your fluency in both the written and spoken language will develop, as will your ability to understand the language in both the spoken and written form.
Aspects of society; artistic culture; multiculturalism; aspects of political life; grammar and translation.
Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes worth 100 marks in total and 50% of A Level
One text and one film or two texts from the list set in the specification. Grammar.
Written exam (two essays): 2 hours worth 80 marks in total and 20% of A Level
Individual research project on one of four sub-themes i.e. aspects of society or artistic culture or multiculturalism in society or aspects of political life in society.
Oral exam: presentation plus discussion: 21–23 minutes (including 5 minutes preparation time), worth 60 marks in total and 30% of A Level.
The course fosters a range of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity, all of which are valuable to you as an individual and to society.
You can use the skills and qualifications gained to access career opportunities both at home and abroad.
The course is ideal if you want to specialise in language specific careers, such as teaching, translating or interpreting (in both the public and private sector) or if you are interested in the travel and tourism industry.
Certain languages lend themselves well to certain career choices such as engineering, science and the finance sector. For many other careers, being proficient in a language broadens career prospects. On a wider level, anyone who wishes to travel for either work or pleasure would benefit from A Level language.
Grade 6 or above in GCSE French
French is a subject that works alongside most other subjects, through French you are able to learn a lot more about the other subjects that you will study. Studying French at A-Level opens up a world of opportunities and complements a wide range of subjects. It pairs well with English Literature, enhancing your analysis of global texts, and with History, deepening your understanding of French history and European affairs. If you're interested in Politics, Law, Business Studies and Economics, it gives you an edge in global markets. Geography students can explore French-speaking regions and environmental issues. For those studying Philosophy, French allows you to engage with works by thinkers in their original language.
